In the early days of the church, Advent was a time of prayer, fasting & confession. Today, Advent is more a time of preparation & expectation of the coming of the Lord. Did you know the second advent candle has 3 different themes? Faith--to indicate the faith it took for Mary & Joseph to deal with the unexpected pregnancy & the trip to Bethlehem; Peace--for the peace promised to all mankind through the coming of the Savior; & the Bethlehem Candle pointing to the Savior's birth in a manger. He is coming again. Prepare!

Psalm 13 is a lament, a cry of the heart to be heard and comforted, and finally a declaration of one man's trust in a holy, sovereign God. David was going through a dry spell and poured out his heart in this song. His laments and questions could be our own. We are not the only ones who wonder where God is when we are hurt or confused or grieving. David, however, opened his heart and spirit to the witness of God in his life and came to the conclusion that when the enemy puts us on a roller coaster, there is a purpose to the times we feel in the wilderness. He is using the time when we struggle to prepare us for a particular work He has planned for us. God will not forget or leave us, but He will build us and challenge us to bring us to a place of trust and a place of experience in Him. Joseph saved a nation, Paul was a voice for the Truth, the Way and the Light, and David was a man after God's own heart, all by learning of His providence and character through the trials and situations the Lord ordained in their lives. Trust that He will do, and in fact does, the same in your life.

Psalm 23 Anointing a sheep's head with oil... by Teresa Messick I have to admit, I always wondered what this part of Psalm 23 meant. I thought “He anoints my head with oil” was figurative language for God keeping the Psalmist healthy. I never knew this parallel. ~
Anoint my head with oil...
“Sheep can get their head caught in briers and die trying to get untangled.
There are horrid little flies that like to torment sheep by laying eggs in their nostrils which turn into worms and drive the sheep to beat their head against a rock, sometimes to death. Their ears and eyes are also susceptible to tormenting insects. So the shepherd anoints their whole head with oil.
Then there is peace. ~ That oil forms a barrier of protection against the evil that tries to destroy the sheep."

Who is worthy to inherit the Land of Israel? The psalmist comforts the righteous one who sees only the arrogant succeeding in the world. He speaks of the fleeting nature of the wicked and notes how they will ultimately fall. Those who have faith in the Lord, however, will ultimately inhabit the land. The Story of Psalms 42 and 43
We think that these two psalms started as one psalm. The Jews made them into two psalms about 200 years before Jesus came to the earth. They did this when they translated their Bible from Hebrew into Greek. .....We do not know who wrote the psalm. What we do know about him is that:
· in the past he went to the house of God in Jerusalem (verse 4) · he can not go there now (verse 2) · he hoped that one day he would go back to it (verse 5) · he was now 200 kilometres (or about 124 miles) north of Jerusalem (verse 6) · his enemy had taken him away from his home (Psalm 43:1).
This probably happened to many people in the Old Testament of the Bible. Maybe it was someone that King Jehoash of Israel took as a hostage. He took hostages from Jerusalem in Judah to the mountains of Hermon in Israel. The story is in 2 Kings 14:14. A hostage is someone that is not free. His enemy catches him. He puts him in a place *like a prison. The enemy lets the hostage out only when the enemy gets what he wants. Maybe the hostage in the psalm was a Levite from the house of God. We call this house a *temple. Levites were God’s servants in the *temple. He may have been one of the "*sons of Korah". Look after Psalm 43 where it tells you who they were. Sometimes hostages never return home. They die in prison, or in the country where their enemies take them. If the enemy was not Jehoash in 800 *BC then maybe it was: the King of Assyria in 700 *BC; or the King of Babylon in 600 *BC. *BC means "years Before Jesus Christ came to the earth". Many of the hostages in Assyria or Babylon never went home.
Whatever story is true, the hostage went through two places before the end of his journey. One was a desert place, where there was not much water but a lot of sand. The other was a group of mountains called the Hermons. Iraq is now where Assyria and Babylon were.

Ps. 82 speaks to all of us as judges of the people and world around us, although Asaph was directing this teaching/exhortation psalm toward the leadership of his day. He does not speak in "dark sayings", but plainly in words easily understood by even the "hard of hearing". Here is a straight forward example of a psalm that is not a direct expression of praise and worship to Jehovah, but uplifts His standards and holds His people accountable for their words and/or actions. No doubt, Asaph was responding to the bribery, unbridled sexuality, greed, and outright lawlessness he saw around him in both the culture and the church of his day. Such sin, he knew, dishonored Jehovah and belittled what He has called holy... Asaph's words and admonitions ring just as loud and true today....

Psalm 84:1-4~exploring the joys of pressure, the joys of being part of a household and all that entails, especially at harvest time. This Psalm was written for the priests who realize the priviledge of repentance... ok, saints, how many of you understand gittith, which means the joy of the winepress? How many of us have experienced the freedom and singing and dancing that comes even as working the grapes stains the clothes and the persons treading the grapes and totally wears out the workers doing the harvesting? We are called kings and priests, workers in His fields, and the harvest is ripe~are you willing to toil and get tired, dirty, stained, and even exhausted to get to the final part of the harvest that includes singing, dancing and banqueting with the King in elebration? Psalm 84:1-4 sets the stage for repentance and a return home to the temple and protection of a loving Father, and an awareness, as Paul told us in the New Testament, that we are living within bodies that are the temples of the Holy Ghost...

In the prior study, Asaph remarked about the sparrows and swallows who had made nests within and around the Temple. Like these small birds, believers in Jehovah returned yearly to the Temple to offer prayers, praise and sacrifices. It drew them back into His home, and brought them fellowship and renewed relationship with family, friends, and the Israeli culture while tightening their relationship with the God of the Universe. For those who came, it built "home"; for those who could not, for one reason or another, it built need to re-evaluate the choices they made and long to be close to family, friends and God again. Asaph explores this phenomenon and shares the benefits and heartsickness of those who can be a part, and those who are separated from this pilgrimage.

Age. It’s a natural process that comes to every person on earth… Pastor Billy has just completed 27 years as a Prison Minister and gives his testimony as to the greatness of the Lord and His covering for all those years. It is the praise and worship of His people that brings us close to Him. He is always there, be we are not always aware until we praise, worship, reach out, and recognize the fire that He is... Psalm 113:1-9 asks the believer directly, "Who is like the Lord our God!?" This short psalm asserts His greatness and the worthiness of praising and worshiping so great a God. Too often the church sees our God as too small, but He is not! How big is YOUR God??
Psalms 126:6 For what sort of peace should we pray? Pray for the well-being of Yerushalayim
This psalm starts with the words sha’alu sh’lom Yerushalayim, ‘Pray for the well-being of Yerushalayim.’ Shalom (שלום), translated here as ‘well-being,’ is the first Hebrew word many people learn. It actually has three meanings: ‘hello,’ ‘goodbye’ and ‘peace.’ It is the word with which friends greet one another, but shalom is more than a greeting; it is also a blessing. Peace is the most important gift we can ask from Hashem, on an individual level, as families, and between nations. It is therefore of utmost significance that the world’s holiest city, Yerushalayim (ירושלים), has the word shalom at its core because it is meant to be the source for all peace on earth. King David exhorts “Pray for the well-being of Yerushalayim,” for when Yerushalayim is confronted with conflict, the whole world suffers. Conversely, though, when Yerushalayim is at peace, the entire world enjoys serenity.
